Something More about Something...

Something More Than Night
Blog

Nothing finer than launching a new novel into the world. It’s been a while, but things do not always go to plan, and publishers come and go also.
So here it is Something More than Night, originally entitled Farewell the Dawn. Why the change, both are good, just Something More than Night, is creepier I think. The idea stems way back to a short story I wrote Into The Endless Sea of Night (A personal favourite) first published in Astonishing Adventures Magazine Issue 6 in the USA in 2009 and reprinted in Full Fathom Forty: The British Fantasy Society’s 40TH Anniversary Anthology in the UK in 2011. You can read the story on my website and its tiny addendum. Why it is an important story? Because it introduces the certain creatures and elements and mythos that envelops this new novel release.
The idea to expand the idea into a novel came partly from a dream and a simple premise: what would happen if the sun didn’t rise today?
Big thanks to Mick Sims for reading it first and for Daniel Boucher for the great cover. It was Mick who suggested I omit a couple of pages from the book, which you can see as the deleted scene right at the end of the book after the epilogue. He suggested the scene though a lovely piece, had nothing to add to the story, a dead end of chapter finish. Taking something you love out of a novel can be hard, but it was the correct call. It might pop up again in another story one day, who knows.
The epilogue at the end might be one of those Marmite moments. If you hate it, then just pretend the novel finishes a page before. If you liked it, it just adds context and a deeper mythos to the novel and explains the darkness.
I hope you enjoy the book. Thank you for being an ever patient reader, I won’t leave it so long next time, I promise.

Something More than Night will be launching on Saturday 22nd October 2016 at Gamesfest Tring Herts UK. http://www.gamesfest.co.uk/
and available on Amazon in print and Kindle formats.

These are the questions -

1) What is the working title of your next book? AZ: Anno Zombie
2) Where did the idea come from for the book? From a dream I had a couple of years ago on holiday.
3) What genre does your book fall under? Horror
4) What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters in a movie rendition? I’m always terrible at this, I have images in my head what my main characters look like, but they don’t match any actors I know.
5) What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book? Hell rains down on Tucson Arizona and zombies rise from their graves.
6) Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency? Published by Samhain Horror line USA 4th December.
7) How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript? It took a year to write, because I was writing a YA book at the same time.
8) What other books would you compare this story to within your genre? Dead City by Joe McKinney, The Rising by Brian Keene.
9) Who or what inspired you to write this book? Like I said the main action parts came from a dream I have on holiday. Those scenes stayed in the book pretty much as the dream.
10) What else about the book might pique the reader's interest? The AZ in the title means Arizona. If you like zombie books I hope you will like this, if you liked Hedge End and don’t like zombie books, I hope you’ll give it a go for the human journey I put my survivors through.

Hidden Gems  of Vampire books past

Picture
I used to love reading vampire books back in the day. That day being twenty or more years ago now. From Stoker's Dracula, to Stephen King's Salem's Lot and Anne Rice's books.

They were some books that got a lot of attention and praise, but I'd thought I'd list a few of the other hidden gems that you might not have sampled. Listed only in the order I took them from my bookshelf.

1. The Holmes Dracula File by Fred Saberhagen.(Early icon mash-up)
2. The Stake & Bite by Richard Laymon
3. Darklost by Mick Farren
4. Vampires by John Steakley (better than the film)
5.The Vampire's Apprentice by Richard Lee Byers (loved this one)
                                   6. The Vampire Anthology presented by Roger Vadim (stories from Poe, Le Fanu, E. F. Benson,        Bloch & Bradbury) (the book rather than the authors is the hidden gem)

What are your Vampire novel hidden gems?
